Accomplish a Life-Changing Odyssey: Penetrate the Mystery of the Panch Kedars
Within the Spiritual Matrix of the Himalayas, a 5,000-year-old legend whispers secrets of transformation and redemption. The Panch Kedars, five symbolic/sacred manifestations of Lord Shiva, beckon those who wish to challenge themselves to embark on a journey of ultimate self-discovery and liberation.
The Quest for Atonement
According to the Mahabharata, the World’s longest and most ancient poem, in the aftermath of the epic Kurukshetra war, the victorious Pandavas sought to absolve themselves of their sins. Upon consulting their Gurus, they discovered that only the boundless compassion of Lord Shiva could satiate their quest for redemption.
However, Shiva, outraged by the deceit and treachery displayed during the Kurukshetra War, remained unmoved by their prayers and pleadings and sought to evade them. Assuming the form of a bull, he grazed serenely in the present-day Garhwal valleys, a place he cherished deeply.
Undeterred, the Pandavas pursued the elusive bull as it disappeared into the subterranean realms, bound for present-day Nepal. During its flight, the divine bull manifested at five sacred Himalayan mountain sites – Kedarnath, Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpnath, collectively revered as the Panch Kedars.

Unlock the Secrets of Pancha Kedars
Given the potency of Prana or Vital Energy that lies locked at these power spots, just by being in close proximity to these sites one can ignite inner wisdom and unveil the infinite potential within. The keys to these states are the meditation practices from the Kashmir Shaivism School, particularly the Pratyabhijna and the Shiva Sutras.

ITINERARY
Time taken: 10-12 hours drive; 30 minute trek
Trail type: Initially a paved mud track which becomes cemented as you approach the village.
On our first day, we embark on a lengthy car journey to reach our base camp, the starting point for our ascent to the first Kedar, Kalpeshwar. Departing early from Rishikesh, we travel for 9-10 hours by road to Devgram village, followed by a 1-hour trek on foot to reach the base camp.
Our overnight stay will be at our partner guest house.
In preparation for the challenging trek ahead, we will practice the Acclimatizing Pranayama Sequence, a 45-minute routine specially curated by researchers at AryaMarga Yoga. This sequence is designed to facilitate Prana Harmonization, synchronizing our energy with the surrounding natural environment.
Time taken: 2-3 hours
Trail type: Easy. Initial ascent for 20-25 minutes followed by level walk for 10 minutes. Last 10-15 minutes is an ascent on steps.
Begin the day with an early morning practice of 27 Asanas 5 Element Kriya before taking a walk around Devgram village, followed by a light breakfast. We then proceed to Kalpeshwar, aiming to arrive in time for the morning Aarti/Pooja. This revered site is home to the legendary Kalpavriksha, the wish-fulfilling tree. Perched at an elevation of 2134 meters, the cave temple of Kalpeshwar enshrines Shiva in his majestic matted hair form.
Next, we visit the ancient Dhyan Badri temple for a brief meditation session, one of the five sacred Badris. Here, we delve into meditations from Vijnanabhairav, aiming to access the profound Bhairava state of consciousness.
Later in the day, we receive a comprehensive briefing on jungle mountain survival and camping tips. Additionally, we explore Penta Sensorial Kriyas from AryaMarg’s Trauma Therapy Modules, designed to harmonize our senses and foster inner balance.
Time taken: 8-10 hours, 12 km
Trail type: Moderate. Gradually ascending all the way to Bansi Narayan
Rise early today and fuel up with breakfast before embarking on a journey to the breathtaking Bansi Narayan temple. This monolithic marvel, crafted from stone and nestled among boulders, is a sight to behold.
We’ll savor lunch near the Urvashi temple, where a natural water spring quenches our thirst. From there, a gentle yet steady ascent unfolds, leading us to the Bansi Narayan temple, our enchanting campsite for the night. Imagine a dreamy setting with lush green meadows and panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan peaks.
As night falls, venture to a higher cave, just a 25-30 minute trek from the temple. This serene spot is where we’ll practice our night meditations of the ancient Vijnanabhairav Tantra, immersed in the stillness and splendor of nature.
Time taken: 9-11 hours, 14 km
Trail type: Moderate
Today is the longest and most demanding day of our journey, requiring maximum effort and endurance. While the ascent is minimal, the continuous walking can be challenging for those unaccustomed to it. Your grit and determination will be put to the test.
The trail to Dumak is relatively easy, featuring a 10km descent through dense forests, serpentine streams, and giant chestnut trees. We’ll pass through Kalgoat village, where we may stop for a quick meal.
From Dumak, we embark on a 4-5 hour trek to Toli Bugyal, a quintessential Himalayan alpine meadow boasting a picturesque lake and surrounded by lush forests. This campsite offers breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan peaks.
In the evening, we’ll practice the 5-Element Harmonizing and Rejuvenation sequence of Hatha Asanas, and delve into the science behind this transformative practice.
Time taken: 7-8 hours, 10 km
Trail type: Moderate.
From Toli Bugyal, we embark on a 2-3 hour trek to Panar, a picturesque sloping meadow nestled at 11,155 feet. Panar boasts a tourist hut and a nearby shepherd settlement, both offering sustenance. Pilgrims often opt to stay in the cave, situated just above the meadows, en route to Rudranath.
The well-defined stone path from Panar to Rudranath temple features gradual ascents, culminating in a breathtaking ridge walk with unparalleled Himalayan views. We’ll traverse Pitradhar, the highest point of this trek.
In total, the journey from Panar to Rudranath temple takes approximately 4.5 hours. Upon reaching the second Kedar, we’ll immerse ourselves in the stories of Panch Kedars, meditate beside the serene Saraswati Kund, and engage in a enlightening conversation with the temple priest
Time taken: 8-9 hours, 14 km
Trail type: Easy-Moderate
Embark on a hike towards Pitradhar, followed by a scenic trek to Naola Pass. The trail then winds through the pristine, untouched meadows of Dhanpal Bugyal and Hansa Bugyal, leading us to the revered Anusuya Devi Temple. This 14km descent is relatively easy, allowing us to conserve energy for the spiritual experiences ahead. Upon reaching the temple, we’ll gather around the ancient devdar tree for a serene evening meditation session.
Time taken: 2 hours drive 50kms, 4 hours trek – 7kms
Trail type: Easy-Moderate
Begin our descent from Anusuya Devi Temple to Mandal, marking the conclusion of our trek at this road head. We then drive from Mandal to Gopeshwar, followed by a journey to Tungnath, situated at an elevation of 3600 meters. As the highest Shiva temple in the Chamoli district, Tungnath offers breathtaking views. FAQ
The Everest Region, along with most of the other trekking areas in Nepal, has four distinct seasons. Spring, summer, autumn and winter. The months from March to May, pre-monsoon, and from October to early December, post-monsoon, are the most popular for trekking to Everest Base Camp. Every season offers its own excitement and atmosphere and in principle, you can go trekking year-round. There are good reasons why spring and autumn are considered the trekking season. Below we’ll give you a run-down of what each of the seasons are like.
Altitude. That’s by far the hardest part of this trek. I have trekked and climbed above 5000 meters in Africa, South America and Asia many times and more often than not the thin air is the crux of an expedition, not the technical difficulty. Each year more than 30,000 people set out from Lukla to trek up the Khumbu Valley to one of the world’s highest campgrounds in the world. With an increasing number of trekkers, the path has improved dramatically over the past two decades. In technical terms, the classic Everest Base Camp trek is not difficult, as it is walking rather than climbing Everest Base Camp. However, trekkers should still be fit. The fitter you are, the more comfortable and enjoyable the trek will be and the bigger the chance of successfully reaching EBC.
